The Little Red Hen & Andy Warhol

x-posted at my journal [info]prettyedy

I found pictures from a 1958 children's book that was illustrated by Andy Warhol.

I love the Little Red Hen story. And I love Warhol's illustrations. Never mind that Andy's hen looks like a magenta pigeon (in most of the illustrations).

Andy Warhol actually got his start doing illustrations for books and magazines, and what pretty well-known for it before he went into fine art. His silkscreen prints are what became really famous in the end.

Andy's illustrations are cute, although I think he was just a good, not a great, illustrator. Interesting how he has the hen and animals living in this modernish house and yet she's growing crops in the yard and cooking on this stove that seems to be about 100 years old. Makes the book seem kind of weird.

Wow. This was a treat...it was neat to see a subtle foreshadowing of the silkscreens to come...the black lines, the bright, flat colors...
